National Tulip Day 2023- Tulips & Vermeer

13 Dec 2022

National Tulip Day marks the beginning of tulip selling season in the Netherlands. To celebrate, tulip growers set up a temporary garden with over 200,000 tulips on Museumplein behind the Rijksmuseum and invite the public to pick a bunch of tulips for free to take home. Dutch Olympic skater, Irene Schouten was on hand to christen a new variety of tulip, the Tulipa Dutch Pearl, which is in honor of Vermeer's famous painting, The Girl With a Pearl Earring. Irene also officially opened the garden with an amazing fire show. The eagerly awaiting tulip pickers immediately entered the garden to the sounds of a live marching band. With their colorful bunches under their arms, everyone went home happy.
